The cathedral was established in 1224 on land granted by King Alexander II outside the burgh of Elgin and close to the River Lossie. Famously known for falling victim to the rage of the Earl of Buchan, more commonly known as the Wolf of Badenoch, the cathedral was damaged after being set alight on the 17th of June, 1390.
